Emile Durkheim introduced the term ‘Anomie’ to define one of the abnormal type of society formed as a result of ‘division of labour’. He explained that though material life changes rapidly, standards and values are not changing as much as needed.
For example, factory workers do boring and monotonous activities everyday. They do not feel like they are doing anything useful. They do degrading and meaningless work, and do not even get dignity of labour. This causes conflicts between labour and management.
Values and norms haven’t changed to the extent that made workers feel like society needs and respects them. Norms aren’t helping workers to feel like they are doing meaningful work.
