What is primary socialisation?

Primary socialization is the most important part of the socialization process and occurs during infancy and childhood. During this stage, children learn basic knowledge, language, and behaviours. This process usually happens within the family, where children absorb the norms, values, and beliefs of their society. They learn how to communicate and behave according to the expectations of their culture. As Frønes explains, primary socialization involves internalizing the fundamental ideas and culture of society, shaping a child’s understanding of the world. The family plays a key role in moulding the child’s early development.
